What's New in Massage
How Much Massage Is Enough?
Over the years, many of my clients have asked me how often they should get a massage. Well, if it were me AND I had just won the lottery I would be getting one every day, however, most of us aren’t living like Oprah. Unless you have a specific problem you are working through then a good rule of thumb is once or twice a month.
Massage-like diet and exercise-has a cumulative effect. You reap the benefits when you include massage in your decision to move towards a more healthy lifestyle. I am passionate about wellness and even more passionate about educating my clients in the things they can do to help themselves in addition to the regular massages they get from me.
One thing I have noticed in my practice is that my clients who exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet tend to recover from injuries quicker than those that do not. A good number of my clients have come to me with neck and shoulder pain due to sitting at a computer all day. It is SO important to get up and move – the body was not meant to be idle for long periods of time. Set a timer at your desk or an email reminding you to get up and take a 5 or 10 minute break every hour or two. I’ve actually timed it myself and it only takes 5 minutes to walk 10 flights of stairs or run through several neck, arm and shoulder stretches. Doing this 3 or 4 times during the day can make a HUGE difference.
Massage does a great job at breaking up scar tissue and flushing out toxins; it increases circulation and even increases your white blood cell count giving your immune system a boost. While massage has many benefits the one thing it cannot do is fix a weak muscle.
So get up from your desks and get moving – and don’t forget to incorporate regular massage into your wellness plan!
